The FastSMS command can now also be used to manage the Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) on a mobile phone. With a simple command the indicator can be switched on and with another command it can be disabled again.
This means that now there is no longer any excuses why you can't leave your mobile voicemail service behind and start using your Asterisk voice messaging when you're in the office and when you're out and about.
The FastSMS MWI command drops right into your existing dialplan.
How to Use
Firstly make sure you have created a standard FastSMS account and have installed the FastSMS module (go here if you haven't already completed those steps). Note: you do not need to upgrade your account or the software you downloaded in order to start using MWI if you have already set yourself up for using FastSMS for standard text messaging.
Now, check out our whitepaper which describes how to control the mobile MWI from a dialplan as well as discussing general issues about using Asterisk based voicemail on a mobile phone.
Phone Compatibility
FastSMS can control the MWI on nearly all mobile phone models connected to most GSM and UMTS (3G) based mobile networks worldwide. We do not currently support CDMA or other mobile network systems.
Pricing
Changing the MWI status is currently charged at the same rate as sending a standard text message with the FastSMS command.
